Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.

Gallaudet University was selected by our founder as one of the core grantees from the inception of the Foundation. Gallaudet is the only liberal arts university in the world designed exclusively for deaf and hard of hearing students. Their mission “to serve as a comprehensive, multipurpose institution of higher education for deaf and hard of hearing citizens” is perfectly aligned with the Johnson Scholarship Foundation’s commitment to assisting disadvantaged people to obtain education. Financial need is a scholarship requirement.

Most recently, the Foundation has also stepped forward to assist in the support of the Gallaudet Leadership Institute, a professional training program specifically for teaching deaf people how to be leaders in the business and education fields. This program is uniquely qualified to provide deaf and hard of hearing individuals with programming specifically tailored to their personal and professional needs and through the University’s consortium of regional programs to extend those programs across the nation. It was established to address acute leadership shortages in education and other social service professions, including deaf-centric for-profit and non-profit agencies and corporations.
