In 2008, the Foundation entered into two agreements with the University of West Florida in Pensacola. The first of these agreements provides for an annual grant by the Foundation of up to $120,000 through 2012. In order to qualify for these annual grants, the University of West Florida must match them in increasing proportions over the life of the agreement. By the end of the agreement term, Foundation grants should total $600,000 and the University of West Florida’s match will be $1 million. This will then be matched by funds from the State of Florida and create an endowment of over $2.5 million by the year 2013. This endowment will be used exclusively for scholarships for students in financial need at the University of West Florida.
The Johnson Scholarship Foundation entered into a second agreement in 2008 with the University of West Florida. This agreement provides for a grant of up to $100,000 over a 5 year period in order to top up the University’s contribution to Florida’s First Generation Scholarship Program. It addresses an immediate need for sufficient funds to allow University of West Florida to obtain the maximum State match for students of parents who have not completed a course of study at a post secondary educational institution.
The partnership between the University of West Florida and the Johnson Scholarship Foundation should have a profound impact on financially disadvantaged students. Annually, more than 100 students with financial need will be provided scholarship support to help them obtain higher education. As the endowment funds grow, the number of scholarship recipients will increase. The impact on these students and northwest Florida will be significant.
